Daylight Savings Time Tips for Parents

Did you know Daylight Savings Time is ALREADY next weekend?! I don't know about you, but that sure sneaked up on me fast! I'm really not complaining though. Although we've had a record-breaking mild winter in New England, I am ready for spring! I am ready for sunshine and warmth, and spending time outdoors with my family!

While Daylight Savings Time means more daylight, and a sign that warmer days are ahead, if you're a parent, you are all too familiar with the horror of readjusting your little ones sleep habits during this transition.  I want to share a few tips I have found to work for my family.

Daylight Savings Time Tips for Parents

Everyone knows exercise is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But, did you know that staying active and exercising also promotes healthy sleep habits? Don't think you have to run a marathon or do any extra strenuous workouts either. Even light-walking or any moderate exercise will do. Just don't exercise 2 hours before bedtime.

Take a power nap
A brief 20 minute catnap is really all you need to feel re-energized. In fact, I sometimes find that when I nap longer than 20 minutes, I feel more tired than I was originally!

Cut back on caffeine
Especially during the evening hours. Caffeine disrupts your body's internal clock. In fact, caffeine should not be consumed at least 4 hours before bedtime. I know I am guilty of this one. Sometimes blogging keeps me up late at night, and I cannot resist a nice hot cup of coffee. If you're craving that taste, try decaf instead.

Keep the light out
One of the hardest things about Daylight Savings with children, is it's sometimes still light outside when they go to bed!! We have room darkening shades in all of the bedrooms, and find it helps out a ton. My husband also greatly appreciates it when he's working overnight shifts and needs to sleep during the day.

Avoid electronic devices
Who is guilty of taking their phone to bed with them? :::raises hand::: While I am 100% guilty of doing this, I am fully aware how bad it is. By doing this, you don't allow your brain to shut off. Your body is unable to rest, and it essentially keeps you awake longer.

Use natural sleep aids
Sometimes we all need just a little extra help in the sleep department. I prefer drug-free alternatives to help get a good nights sleep.
