5 Ways to Baby Proof Your Home

When I found out I was pregnant with my firstborn, I thought of everything. Baby names, nursery decor, must-have baby items, and most importantly, how we would baby proof our home to keep our child safe.

Being well-informed on child safety practices is crucial for all parents. Today I want to discuss 5 ways you can baby proof your home.

5 ways to baby proof y our home #safeandstylish

1.  Secure Furniture:
Any large piece of furniture that might tempt your little one to pull on or           climb, needs to be secured to the wall. This includes entertainment stands, bookcases, dressers, etc. It doesn't matter if it's heavy or light, it needs to be secure. We have a huge entertainment/bookcase that extends the entire length of one of our walls. Fastening it was a must to ensure safety for our kids.

2.  Use Safety Switch Outlets or Outlet Protectors:
We built our house, so all of our outlets are baby-safe. They have a spring-loaded mechanism, that only work when they are used as they were designed to -- when plugging something in. They need to be pressed simultaneously. Another option is of course to purchase outlet covers. They are ridiculously inexpensive. Whichever option you choose, your child will be protected.

3.  Keep chemicals and medicine locked up safe:
All chemicals should be stored in a cabinet with a childproof safety lock. Medicines should be kept out of reach in a cabinet.

4.  Baby Safety Gates:
Any location of your house that could be of harm to your child, needs to have a secure safety gate. Places of special concern would of course be staircases. It is best to have a gate installed at both the top and the bottom of your stairs.

5.  Use Cordless Window Treatments:
Long cords pose a huge strangulation risk to children, as well as pets. There are much safer options. Smith & Noble is an active member of the Window Covering Safety Council. They recommend that only cordless window coverings, or those with inaccessible cords, be used in homes with young children.

Protecting these two little boys of mine is my top priority.

Right now Smith & Noble is offering a $50 promotion per window treatment when you bring in your old ones that are unsafe. Just click here for more info.
