Five Ways to Teach Your Children to Give Back

I am a huge advocate for giving back. Random acts of kindness are such easy, thoughtful gestures we can do for others. And you know what? They make you feel good inside! While I have always been a firm believer in giving back, I had much more appreciation towards it after my accident. In fact, it was one of the first things I thought of when I woke up. Somehow I managed to survive. I was listed in critical condition and had 14 broken bones -- but miraculously I survived. I wanted to do more with my life. To teach my children to do more.

Here are five simple ways you and your family can give back:

(1). Donate items to an animal shelter.  Shelters are always willing and grateful for donations. Some things they are always looking for are old blankets,  towels, and newspapers.  A bag of dog food and treats would also be welcome, as well as cat litter. Some shelters would also gladly accept volunteers to help care for the animals. I don't know about you...but spending time with adorable animals sounds like fun!

(2). Cleanup a nearby playground or beach. If you have little kids, then I'm sure you spend some good quality time at the playground. If you're lucky enough to live near the shoreline, then I'm sure you also frequent the beach! Unfortunately, playgrounds and beaches can easily become littered. The next time you go, grab a trash bag and some gloves, and pick up any litter.

(3). Donate books and toys to a children's hospital. What is better than bringing a smile to children? There are many sick kids in hospitals. Wouldn't it be nice to freshen up their supply of toys and books?

(4). Adopt a family during the holidays. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. Adopt a family in need during the holiday season. Provide them with a generous food basket, and gifts for the children. I would love to make someones holiday a little brighter.

(5). Support companies that give back. I don't know about you, but I feel good when I purchase a product and I know the company is giving back to a worthy cause. Right now you can purchase Centrum Vitamins at Walgreens, and they will donate 1% of the proceeds to Vitamin Angels.

Vitamin Angels is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide mothers and children vitamins and minerals they otherwise would not have access to.

Also, right now when you spend $30 or more on eligible Centrum products at Walgreens, you'll receive 10,000 Balance Rewards points -- it's a win win!
