Last week I shared with you some tips to prepare your family for the upcoming school year. Today I want to talk about a few things to help you transition into your new crazy routine those first few weeks — besides immense amounts of caffeine.
This is Lincoln’s third year of preschool. Honestly, this year is a breeze for me. I feel like we’ve got this routine down now. Don’t talk to me next year though when it’s time to enter Kindergarten. I think I’ll be a mess!
Here are a few things that have worked for our family.
Tip #1 — Get as much prepared as you possibly can the night before. This might sound like a no brainer, but there really is a lot you can do to get your kids ready for the next morning. Choose their outfits for the next day, pack their lunches/snack, and have their backpack all ready to go.
Tip #2 — Get yourself a planner. I don’t care if it’s an app you use on your phone, or on paper…but get something. Personally, I prefer a good ol’ fashioned paper planner. I like to write everything down, and be able to flip through it. I suppose you can do that on your phone, but that’s what works for me. I seriously live by my planner…as does my husband.
Tip #3 — Communicate. We have a great relationship with Lincoln’s teacher. We have known her for almost 3 years now, and I will miss her so very much next year. She has made a huge impact on Lincoln’s life, and has been such a positive influence to him. His teacher and I have a notebook we keep in Lincoln’s backpack. We write notes back and forth to each other to keep us both informed on Lincoln. For example: If Lincoln didn’t sleep well the night before, or if he was sad about something, I can let her know. And of course, if there’s something happy going on in our life, I write about that too. It allows her to know what is happening at home, which of course reflects how Lincoln is in school. His teacher in return writes how his day was at school. I love love LOVE this, and hope his future teachers will be open to something like this.
Communication is also important with not only your child’s teacher, but with your child. Every night, usually at dinner time, we talk about how Lincoln’s day was at school. I don’t just ask him, “what did you do today?” Because that answer is usually, “nothing!” Ha! You really have to get a bit more creative. I’ll ask Lincoln what made him happy today, what made him laugh. Did he go outside on the playground? Did he have a special job? Did he dance? Paint? Sing? Usually our entire dinner conversations are centered around Lincoln’s day.
I know I’ve mentioned in many posts that we are a busy, BUSY family. What family isn’t in today’s day in age? Whether it be school, doctor appointments, soccer, play dates, vacations, or even errands…it really seems like we are always on the go.
When we’re pressed for time, I know I can count on McDonald’s for a convenient, wholesome meal for my kids. And at $2.99, you can’t go wrong! I really appreciate how McDonald’s Happy Meal offers wholesome options, like apple slices and GO-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt for my children when we’re on-the-go. They also offer 1% low-fat white milk, 100% apple juice, and Lincoln’s favorite, fat-free chocolate milk. I’m really excited about the Cuties clementines that will be offered this fall.
