Well, we’ve been in the back-to-school routine now for a couple of weeks. This was our second year preparing for the upcoming school year. Which basically means we’re pretty much pro’s, right?! Ha!
Last year was insane with me being enormously pregnant, preparing for Lincoln’s baby brothers arrival. And this year Avery is actually here, so we’re adjusting from one to two children! Our lives are insanely busy, but that’s how we seem to like it!
This post is going to be part one of a two part series, featuring back-to-school survival tips. Today will focus on preparing for school before it actually starts. Next week we’ll talk about tips to help you transition into your new routine those first few grueling weeks.
Tip #1 — Ease into your routine the week before. For the past couple of months, your kids have been enjoying the lazy days of summer. It’s time to get them ready for the hustle and bustle of the school year! Have them go to bed at their school night bedtime. When they wake-up, practice their morning routine. During the day you can focus on more educational activities, and try to keep electronics limited. Beginning your daily routine the week before, will really help your children adjust to their new crazy schedule. Plus, children thrive on routines…it’s a known fact!
Tip #2 — Make back-to-school shopping fun! When I was a kid, I LOVED back-to-school shopping with my mom. We always made a day of it, with going out for lunch and ice cream afterwards. What some people see as a dreaded task, my mom turned it into a memory…and one that I want to pass down to my children. Although Lincoln is only in preschool, I get him completely involved in his shopping for the school year — from clothing, to school supplies!
Tip #3 — Stock up on freezer meals. When I was pregnant with Avery, my mom visited one weekend and we banged out enough freezer meals to last us for one month. This was so, SO helpful when Avery was born. Cooking was the last thing I wanted to do after having my baby. Those newborn snuggles don’t last forever! This also really helps when going back-to-school. All day you’re “go go go” that when you finally come home, cooking isn’t something you really want to do. It’s so helpful if you can just pop a freezer meal into the oven.
I have another secret that makes my life a whole lot easier when preparing for back-to-school. McDonald’s. Lincoln LOVES Happy Meals. While he loves the fun toy, I love that it’s a convenient complete meal for only $2.99.
This past July, McDonald’s started to offer customers the option to choose between a bag of apple slices or GO-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt, which has 25% less sugar than the leading kids yogurt. If you have kids, then you know the LAST thing they need is more sugar! GO_GURT is also a great source of vitamin D and calcium. Lincoln devours his in under a minute. No joke.
This fall McDonald’s is set to offer Cuties clementines as another option to their Happy Meal. Lincoln will have a tough time choosing between those and the apples — I know he won’t give up his GO-GURT!
I really appreciate how McDonald’s is truly committed to the well-being of children. They are continuously making efforts to make a positive impact on nutrition. You can follow them on twitter to stay updated on their developments.
Now here’s the fun part. I’m giving away a $25 Arch Card to one lucky winner! To enter, I want you to share with me some of your back-to-school survival tips! Please use the rafflecopter form below to enter. Good luck, everyone!
