Dinosaur. The word dinosaur derives from the Greek language and means terrible lizard or terrible reptile. This word was used for the first time by English paleontologist Richard Owen in 1842. It meant impressive size of a dinosaur more than what they looked like.

Existence period. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for more than160 million years, starting from the Triassic period (about 230 million years ago), during the Jurassic period and until the end of the Cretaceous period (about 65 million years ago).

Extinction period. This time period is known as the Mesozoic Era, from 250 million years ago until about 65 million years ago. This period is also sometimes called as the Age of the Dinosaurs, when most dinosaurs developed and became extinct.

Cause of extinction. It is believed by scientists that the dinosaurs' extinction was caused by a fallen massive meteorite or huge volcanic activity. These events could have blocked out sunlight and changed ecology on the Earth.

First official name. The first dinosaur which was officially named was the Megalosaurus. It has happened in1824. There also existed a dinosaur with the longest name, it was named Micropachycephalosaurus.

Dinosaurs' researchers. A person who studies and examines dinosaurs is known as a paleontologist.

Feeding. The bigger part of dinosaurs such as the Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus were plant-eaters, others were the true hunters and chased the smaller reptiles.

Protection. To help fight hunting dinosaurs such as the Allosaurus or Spinosaurus, lots of smaller and plant-eating dinosaurs had natural defending weapons. Some dinosaurs had the spikes on the tail, for example the Stegosaurus, and the Triceratops had the three horns attached to the front of head shield.

Other dinosaurs. Pterodactyls are not dinosaurs, they had wings and were able to fly; they lived during the age of dinosaurs. The same goes for reptiles which lived underwater such as the Plesiosaurs.
