It's about that time again!

Lincoln and I are visiting my Dad in sunny Orlando for a few days! Which also means this post is coming to you straight from my iPhone. I'm not too sure how that's going to effect the formatting, so I apologize if this post looks funky.

I'm not sure what's on our agenda this visit, but I'm *hoping* to visit one of the parks. We'll see how much energy my Dad has.

Lincoln was a little trooper during our flight down here. He totally loves flying & is starting to really know the routine. Maybe he'll be a pilot when he grows up!

I'm not too sure how much posting I'll get to do during our stay...if any, for that matter. I do have such exciting news to share with you when we get back home...and no, I'm not pregnant.

Here's a photo from our flight yesterday. Nothing but blue skies!!!

Educational Learning Tablets for Toddlers

Wow.  That sure is a mouthful, huh?!

The other day I did something I swore I would never do.  I download apps on my iPhone for my toddler.  I know I know, it's really not a heck of a big deal, and while I know that many people let their kids play with their phones...I would just prefer if Lincoln had something else to do.  I'm sure the hefty price of an iPhone might have something to do with my reasoning.

I wanted to see what was offered for educational apps.  What I found was seriously A TON!  Loads and loads of pages full of apps that can apparently "teach" my toddler.  I downloaded a bunch of free ones.  Some I liked, while others got deleted immediately.

Lincoln was quite impressed with this new "toy" Mommy discovered for him.  His favorite app is this "game" where you pop balloons.  The balloons have letters on them, & when you pop one, it says the name of the letter.  Pretty neat!  And, while Lincoln is probably more excited about actually popping the balloons & celebrating when he successfully pops them all, I am certain hoping he's learning  little something!

So, I've mentioned I don't really like him playing with my phone.  Hmm.  What to do?  I started to research specific tablets designed for toddlers.  Here's what I came up with.

The Leap Frog LeapPad Explorer.  Looks pretty neat, huh?
The VTech InnoTab.  Looks like the screen is slightly smaller.  But I like a lot of the features.
And last, is the VTech MobiGo.  I like how compact this one is, and it has the most appealing price tag of the three.
So, which one do I go with?  I also should add that the LeapPad and the InnoTab say for ages 4+, while the MobiGo says 3+.  Not sure if that matters much, because I'm pretty sure an iPhone isn't designed for a two year old.  A lot of people have recommended just getting him an iPod Touch.  While this seems like a great idea, I had an iTouch before my iPhone....and I cracked the screen.  I'm sure it would only be a matter of days before that would happen.  And honestly, I kind of think it's a bit ridiculous to get a two year old his own iPod Touch.

Does your toddler have a learning tablet, or do you just suck it up and let him/her play with your phone?

AHH-MAZING Oatmeal!!

I think one of the hardest things when you move out of your parents house and get married, is becoming your very own domesticated goddess.  Or in my case, undomesticated.  Folks, I've set chicken nuggets on fire in the microwave.  I'm not the next gourmet chef, to say the least.

As much as I lack greatness in my cooking abilities, it doesn't stop me from trying!  Lately I've been trying to whip up some new yummy and healthy foods for our family.

The other day I made these whole wheat apple cinnamon oatmeal muffins.  I got the recipe from Pinterest.  Big shocker there, I know. These muffins were disgusting.  My poor Lincoln kept asking to try them because he loves muffins...& cupcakes, which he probably was hoping even more so that's what these were.  But each time he took a bite, he'd quickly make his yucky face & spit it out.  Not that I could blame him.  They were tasteless.  I don't know where I went wrong, because they sounded absolutely delish!

Moving forward.  I was visiting The Heir to Blair's blog.  She posted this [what sounded yummy] recipe for homemade oatmeal.  Awesome.  I love oatmeal.  I've never actually made it from scratch, though.  However, I felt up for the adventure...& let me just say I am SO glad I made this oatmeal. I think it's going to be a new staple in our house.  It's freaking delicious!!!

Now I know you all want the recipe to this yumminess, however I must give credit where credit is do.  So if you'd like to whip up your own batch, click here.  I added mashed banana and canned pumpkin to mine...& topped with some chocolate chips, of course!

My fridge is now stocked [at least for a few days] of wholesome oatmeal awaiting me each morning :)

What's in a name?

Jared & I had Lincoln's name way before he was ever conceived. We may have discussed other possible names when we found out we were having a sweet boy, but we always went back to "Lincoln."

However, it just occurred to me that I have never shared with you all how we chose his name!

When we tell people our son's name is Lincoln, more often than not they automatically assume we named him after President Abraham Lincoln. While I truly admire President Lincoln, & think he is a great role model for every generation, our Lincoln isn't named after him.

We did however get his name from this guy...

Don't recognize this scrumptious fella? It's Dominic Purcell.

Jared & I were ridiculously HUGE Prison Break fans. In case you've never heard of Prison Break, it was a television series on Fox for a few years. Dominic Purcell's character was "Lincoln."

One night while we were watching the show, I turned to Jared and said, "what do you think of the name Lincoln for a little boy?" He immediately replied that he loved it!

And so, when we found out we were expecting a wee sweet boy, it didn't take us long to agree that his name would be "Lincoln."

Now that we have our little Lincoln, I don't think any other name would have fit him better! It's a strong name, and my sweet boy is SO incredibly strong. Maybe my Lincoln will live up to the great President ;)

Weekend Recap: Date Night!

This past weekend we packed our bags, and took the 2 1/2 hour drive to my Mom's house for the weekend.  Between all of our hectic schedules, and everyone traveling back and forth to Florida to visit my Dad, we haven't seen my Mom in about a month.  In fact, we hadn't even had Christmas with her yet!

Lincoln was very excited to see his Grammy...& I was pretty happy to see my Momma!

We celebrated our "Christmas" on Friday night.  Lincoln made out quite well, as usual...and we surprised my Mom with a Keurig!

Saturday my Mom and I went wedding dress shopping with my aunt.  She just got engaged over the holidays and is planning a wedding in October....SO FUN!!  Lincoln is going to be the ring bearer, which makes me beyond excited!!  Anyways, we had a girls day while Lincoln spent some time with his Daddy and Uncle.

When we got back to my Mom's, Jared and I decided to go out just the two of us for a bit.....a date...yay!  I honestly cannot recall the last time we've gone out without our sweet boy in tow.  We had to be back by 8pm though, because we could not miss the Patriots game!!

So, where did we go you ask?  Umm.  We went to Toys R Us.  Nope.  I'm not kidding you.  We are looking for a play kitchen for Lincoln, so we thought we'd go check them out.  We're still undecided which one to go with, but we're leaning towards the Step2 brand.  If you'd like to recommend your play kitchen, I'd be happy to hear all about it!

After we browsed through the toy store for quite some time, we decided to go grab some dinner.  By dinner, I mean ice cream :)

We had a great time just the two of us.  I wish we could go out more often, but right now we'll take what we can get and be thankful for that.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Oh Yeah, I Had Cancer. And, I'm Thankful

Even I almost forget sometimes.  But I think I'll always have that "cancer cloud" lurking over me.  I suppose it is just something that comes with the territory.

If you're new to my blog, yes, just about three years ago I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.  To get acquainted or to reacquaint yourself with my story, here are some helpful links:

I will not be that girl...

I Have a Case of Bad Luck

And the Results Are In

The Best Kind to Have

So now that you are all caught up with my cancer nightmare...HI!!!

Today I had my yearly appointment with my Endocrinologist.  I always get freaked out with those visits.  It's like I'm walking into my nightmare.  All those memories come flashing back before my eyes.

What makes it even doctors office is in conjunction with the Cancer Center at the hospital.  Fitting, right?  You walk in there and see a lot of people.  A lot of very very sick people.  When the receptionist comes to bring you to your room, you walk by the area where they administer chemo therapy.

These people aren't the lucky ones like me.  They don't have thyroid cancer.  They have something much much worse.  It makes you take a step back and take a  look at your life.  In all honesty, I feel thankful.  Thankful that I had cancer?  No, not a chance.  But it makes me take a look at my life and be thankful for everything I have.  My type of cancer has a 99% cure rate.  My prognosis is beyond excellent.  I'm thankful.

My appointment went well.  I will go back next week at some point for an ultrasound of my thyroid, which is another standard thing I have yearly since my diagnosis.  I've been known to grill the tech while they're checking out my thyroid that is no longer there.  Thankfully they've always been kind enough to answer my questions and say, "there's nothing there, & that's how it should be."

I still cannot fathom that my surgery was almost three years ago.  When I walked into my appointment today, I had my husband with me and my sweet boy.  I am thankful.

Playroom Inspiration

I think I've mentioned once or twice before that we built our own house.  I really don't know what I was thinking, but I wish I thought of incorporating a playroom into our design plans.  We seemed to have had everything else covered.

Open floor plan with kitchen, dining area, and living room - Check!

Four bedrooms - Check!

Two bathrooms, one being a master bath off the master bedroom - Check!

Oversized two car garage - Check!

Office/Playroom - ermmm...ohhhh, crap....

I know exactly where I'd like this room to be in our house.  If we could just break down the wall in our kitchen and add an extra room there, it would be perfect.  The door going outside to our backyard could be off that room rather than our kitchen.  Sounds perfect.  Unfortunately, it's a bit too late.  At least for a few years.

For now, my entire house looks like a playroom.  I suppose that's to be expected with a rambuncious two year old boy.  I've been brainstorming ideas as to how we can contain his toys a bit more efficiently.  We are thinking of temporarily turning what is now our office and fourth bedroom into an office/playroom.  HOWEVER, once we have baby #2, we will need that room for a nursery.  We have four bedrooms, however, I plan on always having a guest room.  We have family and friends who live 2 plus hours away.  When they come visit, they normally spend a weekend with us.  I don't want to give that room up!  Although, I do suppose I could always throw a bed in with the playroom/office when we have #2.  That is definitely something to think about! And now I'm rambling.  Moving forward...

I've turned to one of my favorite sites, Pinterest, for some playroom inspiration.  I love these cubbies and all the bright colors that go along with it.  I also love the little bench idea in between for a reading spot.

I think this sign is so perfect for the room.  Possibly in a brighter color.

I LOVE these beanbag chairs.  However, I have NO idea where they're from.  I love the color, and they look so comfy!  If anyone has seen these, PLEASE share where I can get them!!

In this photo I really like the table and chairs, or stools for that matter.  I think they're from ikea.

And lastly, aren't these colors just so fun?!  They just scream "PLAYROOM!!!"  I love everything about this setup.  Lots of storage, a cute table/chairs set, and look at the alphabet border along with walls!
So now that I have some inspiration, I should probably show the hubs, huh?! After all, he's my handyman.  He built and designed our house.  We have a few other projects in the works that need to be completed before tackling this one, but I think it's definitely a possibility!!  :)

I know I'm biased and all...

...but this picture of Lincoln makes me 100% positive that I made one of the most handsome little boys in the world.  My sweet boy is going to be a little heartbreaker for sure.  Wouldn't you agree...

He has a dump truck and a whisk...quite the combination :)

When I look at this photo, it makes me want to have a million little boys!  I am one blessed Momma!

Happy New Year: Bring on 2012!!!

Happy New Year!  This year, I was so ready to welcome 2012 with open arms.  It's no secret that 2011 was a tough year for my family.  There were way too many tragedies.  2012 is a brand spankin' new year, and many good things WILL happen.

I'm normally not one to make resolutions because, well, we all know how those go.  However, this year I'd like to make some goals for myself.

There are MANY doctors appointments I need to make.  I'm ashamed to say this, but the last time I was at the OB was for my 6 week post partum checkup from Lincoln.  To my defense, I did have 2 appointments scheduled, but I just so happened to also end up getting my wonderful period for both of those appointments.  I know you can still go during that time and all, but I just can't do it!  I called my OB office yesterday and have an appointment scheduled for the end of February.  Now let's just hope AF doesn't decide to show up then!

I also need to find a new primary care doctor.  I haven't found one since moving to Connecticut when we got married 4 1/2 years ago.  This is [obviously] way overdue.  So alas, another appointment.

Next up, I need to find an orthopedist.  Particularly one that at least has some knowledge in Osteogenesis Imperfecta.  I haven't seen one in 6 years.  My old one is out of Boston, and he's a pediatric orthopedist.  I really need to find someone a bit more local.  This is really SO important, and I'm mad at myself for putting this off for so long.

You know how some people dread the dentist?  Yeah.  That's me.  I need to make an appointment for myself, and for Lincoln for that matter.  Heck, Jared needs an appointment too...maybe we'll make a family day of it!

I need to get in shape!  We all say this every New Year, and I know it sounds so cliche.  I'm not looking to lose weight at all.  I'm looking to tone up some and get my body physically stronger.  I cannot tell you the last time I exercised.  It's really important that I maintain some sort of fitness regimen to maintain my bone density.  I need to be a strong Momma for Lincoln.  I need to get my body ready to have another baby someday.  I need to be strong for myself.

And lastly, Lincoln needs to be around kids more often.  I'm thinking of checking out Little Gym and Kindermusik to see if he'd enjoy something like that.  I also want to check out the story times at nearby libraries.  Winter is upon us, and we need to figure out ways to get out of the house more often.  I would like him to go to preschool next year for two days a week, but I think enrolling him in one of these programs would be great for now.

I think that's it.  That seems like enough anyways!  What are your New Years goals?
