I have put off writing this post, because it really pisses me off, honestly. I’m not a bitter person by any means. However, ignorance is something I just cannot phathom.
Because I use a wheelchair when out in public, it’s amazing the looks I get from people when I’m out with Lincoln by myself. Most of the time, I’m completely oblivious to it, because I’m so focused on Lincoln….and honestly, a bit used to it. But while we were traveling a few weeks ago, some people were just plain rude!
Here’s an example: I was traveling with my Mom and Lincoln. Both times when we were checking in for our flights and we handed over our licenses and Lincoln’s birth certificate, I heard the comment, “that’s HER baby?!” Seriously?! I mean, come on people. It’s two thousand freaking eleven. Yes, I do have a physical disability, but I also have this thing called a life, and it’s pretty darn awesome.
When we were at Sea World, my Mom and I were in the restroom. This woman was chatting with us when she said something about my “little brother.” I said, “actually that’s my son.” You should have seen the look of disbelief on her face! Then she went on a rant about how much my Mom must help me out. Umm, no, actually my Mom lives 2 1/2 hours away. Another look of “shock.”
I just think it’s about time some people grow up. Oh, and while I’m on this rant. PLEASE let your children ask me all the questions they want. Do not “shhh” them! I never mind answering questions for kids! However, the ignorant adults need to put a sock in it….to put it nicely ๐

Some people are so rude and I don't blame you for being on a rant about this. This kind of stuff irritates me to no end. Maybe if the parents let their children ask questions, they wouldn't be so rude when they grow up.

amazing isnt it! no matter what it is that's different people have to comment. my husband has a portwine birthmark covering the side of his face and I get a kick out of parents shushing their kids or people trying to steal a peak like I don't notice, and the comments he's gotten….ridiculous! some people suck! and rising above it makes you a better person! go Kami!

I tend to think there are more ignorant people than non-ignorant people in this world. It's a wonder they don't fall over more!

AW, that's just tacky. I'm sorry that you've had run-ins with insensitive idiots. I'm just out stalking blogs and I'm not sure if you have a permanent disability or a temporary one but it sounds like you need no help standing up for yourself. Lincoln is adorable!

mama. you rule. you are strong as heck and you are an awesome mama, and ignoramuses just need to SUCK IT. ๐
the months we had E in a wheelchair gave me great empathy for you and anyone else who needs assistance getting around. it's not easy, and well done to you.

You know what I just realized? I have been following your blog for almost a year now and this is the first time I realize that you had a disability. On another note, people are freakin' ignorant and close minded. They can't imagine their life outside of their known bubble so it's impossible for them to see how someone else can manage.
