Does the term "Mommy Blogger" offend you?

I've seen a lot of posts recently about how bloggers are starting to become offended by being referenced to as a "Mommy Blogger." I'm assuming the problem these bloggers are having is they believe their writing won't be taken seriously because it only comes from a "Mommy Blogger." They won't be considered a "serious writer," because their only a Mommy Blogger.

Am I offended by this title? No. In fact, I like this title. I am a Mom. I am a blogger. AND, I am a writer. To me, the title is a compliment. I am writing about my life....being a Mommy is a HUGE part of my life.

Apparently "Mommy Bloggers" have a rep as only posting for the opportunity to review [free] products, and have poor grammar and punctuation.

Well guess what, this Mommy Blogger has a college degree in :::gasp::: English!

Writing is what I do. It's what I've always done. I'm good at writing. It has always come naturally to me. I was that girl in school who LOVED essay tests or short answers. Because, even if I didn't know the correct answer, I could "write my way out of it."

In my Senior year of high school, we were asked a question for our yearbook. "Where do you see yourself in ten years?" Many put married with kids. Some put traveling around the world. I wrote, "the editor of a successful magazine."

Am I the editor of a successful magazine? Well, no.

BUT, I am writer of this ridiculously awesome "Mommy Blog" called The Mommy Diaries :)

So, if someone calls you a "Mommy Blogger," take it as a compliment. Don't let other people's insecurities get you down. Be proud of that title, and cherish it. Not everyone can own it.

  1. It's interesting to hear about how different people interpret titles... like this one. "mommy blogger" - me, i love it. it's one of my manny hats, and i wear it with honor. i think there are going to be good and bad apples in any group... and that includes "mommy bloggers".

  2. Well said! I've always been proud to say that I am a Mommy Blogger :)
And this Mommy Blogger? She has a BS in Biology, minoring in Psych, and a masters in Physican Assistant studies. Mommy Bloggers are pretty smart chicas, IMO :)

  3. I love the title 'mommy blogger' ... and while I feel like it fits me, I also think it's a little constraining (at least for me). Yes, I blog about being a mom, but I also blog about being a wife, a 30 year old woman, and a person in general.

That being said, the 'mommy' aspect of it connects me to a HUGE group of awesome women with whom I share a huge portion of my life with ... so call me a 'woman-wife-worker-mommy blogger', lol.

  4. I agree. There's really only one example of a word with mother at the front that I would find offensive. Being a mom is the best part of my life. So, call me a "mommy (insert)" anytime.

  5. Well said. I have a degree in Journalism and thought I'd be writing for a successful newspaper by now. I wrote for a paper for 8 months and hated it. Then I become a SAHM and can not see myself going back to a paper. I still love writing, but I writing about my kids brings me more joy than writing the news.

  6. Ditto on everything you are saying here... right down to the Lit degree. :)

  7. I never knew that there was a negative association with mommy blogger term. Sounds silly - doesn't it just mean that the blogger is also a mommy?

  8. I guess you hit a subject that did cross my mind today. I think it is a selling point for some. Advertisers look for that because they know who rules the household. :-)
